The tabernacle features a double door adorned with unique bas-relief artwork inspired by The Canticle of the Creatures. The exterior begins with a tribute to Brother Sun, whom St. Francis likens to the Almighty: “Praised be You, my Lord… especially Sir Brother Sun… beautiful and radiant with great splendor; and bears a likeness of You, Most High One.” At the center, rays of light form a cross, with other elements spiraling clockwise around it. The artwork invites a dynamic encounter, its details gradually revealed as one draws closer to the Blessed Sacrament. This visual experience mirrors the spiritual journey: though God's plans may seem hidden, their beauty unfolds as we approach Him in faith.
Each element of the Canticle is represented:
Sister Moon and Stars appear in the top left, with the moon recessed to reflect light and stars arranged in the Aries constellation, evoking the Paschal mystery.
Brother Wind is depicted through swirling clouds with subtle oriental motifs, reflecting the local context.
Sister Water flows as ocean waves, emphasizing Earth’s vastness and the sacredness of baptism. Above the waves, a dove with an olive branch symbolizes peace and pardon.
Brother Fire emerges in flowing flames, vibrant and strong.
Mother Sister Earth is expressed through grapevines, symbolizing the Eucharist as fruit of the vine. Within the vines, a kneeling figure represents either St. Francis or any disciple in prayer, while the Tau cross forms the Franciscan coat of arms.
Interior Artwork
The interior reveals a celestial realm. To mark the 800th anniversary of the Canticle, eight angels are depicted within clouds, adoring the Blessed Sacrament. The number eight signifies resurrection and new beginnings. From afar, the scene appears as swirling clouds; as one approaches, the angels emerge in postures of worship, creating a sacred atmosphere centered on the Eucharist. As Jesus said, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven…” The polished finish draws the eye and heart toward the Blessed Sacrament.
Enclosure
Crafted from solid wood with elegant corner finger joints, the enclosure symbolizes the interconnectedness of creation. These interlocking “hands,” with 10 slots per corner (40 in total), reflect our earthly journey in harmony with nature. Just as the joints unify and strengthen the structure, they express the Canticle’s vision of humanity and creation working together to glorify God.
