With twenty years in the architectural profession working in the United States and Singapore, Joseph’s diverse portfolio of works across architectural typologies and scales attests to his design beliefs in creating design schemes that uniquely response and contribute to each context for the public and end-users. At the same time, his designs are guided by pragmatism with careful examination of each project’s challenges and constraints, this forms the foundation to his approach to the arts and sculpture.
Baptized in 2016, his journey with arts began in 2017 after attending the Prayer Experience Retreat where he was introduced to using art as part of prayers. Shortly after the retreat, he started using sketching as part of his daily morning prayers while contemplating on the daily scripture readings from the Missal. In 2018, he received an Honorable Mention from Angelico Arts Awards for his artwork named “Daily Reflections”, formed by a collage of his daily reflections’ sketches.
His interest in sculpture was ignited in 2019 after he was asked to repair a small angel from a nativity set at the Carmelite Monastery. Having no formal training in sculpture, he self-taught from books and videos and subsequently made his first air-dry clay sculpture. In 2021, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, he completed the Bas-Relief artwork for the Tabernacle Doors in the Chapel of Incarnation at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.
In 2023, he attended a summer course on sculpture conducted by the Sacred Art School in Florence, Italy, which combines renaissance tradition with innovation for creating contemporary sacred art.
Joseph has developed a deep passion for the creation of art through prayers and hopes that his sculptures serve as contemplative artwork to inspire viewers in their daily prayers.
