The artwork depicts St Joseph in prayer, with a tallit (Jewish prayer shawl) when the angel Gabriel appear to him in a dream. The Prayer shawl is an indication that St Joseph was a devout Jew with strong piety and reverence to God.
We know our Lord would “spent the night in prayer to God” (LK6:12) before choosing the twelve disciples. Similarly, In the face of difficult situation and important choices, I believed that St joseph would turn to prayers to God through the night.
His hands are shown holding a staff with lily blooming, a symbol of his integrity, purity and chastity, as well as reminder of his betrothal to Mother Mary.
The angel Gabriel is depicted as descending to the side of St Joseph and reminding St Joseph not to fear and points to the Glory of God.
The artwork is a reminder for us “to take everything to prayer, and wait on the Lord for guidance and light, …God will reveal everything to us and make us abundantly fruitful.(1)
