The sculpture is inspired by the title “Terror of demons” in the Litany of St Joseph Prayer, composing of St Joseph holding Baby Jesus in the battle against the demons.
Baby Jesus’s body posture is depicted in anticipation of His crucifixion which he will defeat the ancient serpent, the devil. His right hand bestows a sign of eternal blessings to all, while His left hand utilises the lily staff of St Joseph to pierce the throat of this serpent, a reminder that truth will ultimately triumph against the lies of the devil. The lily staff of St Joseph, representing his purity and virtue, is used as an instrument against evil and sinfulness.
St Joseph raises baby Jesus with both hands in a supportive and protective gesture. This sculptural piece attempts to express St Joseph’s inconspicuous and cooperative action of pinning down the serpent with his left feet while he raises and protects baby Jesus from the encircling danger. His head bows in reverence, while he genuflects to the Son of God that he is holding, expressing humility and obedience.
Obedience and humility to the Word, and to God’s Will are what the demons are most fearful of. A silent and humble saint, who work tirelessly in the background to provide and guard the Holy Family in trying situations. Likewise, for each of us, God is able to utilize what the world deems as weakness – the silent worker - to defeat the “noise” of the evil ones.
